died Hoo St Werbegh, Kent, August 1863

on the Knott family tree
part of the
Harrall family story

married to Sophia Youell

father of John Harrall

son of John Harrall
and Sarah ?

Daniel Harrall
(1788-1863). My Father's Father's Mother's Mother's Father's Father. My Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

  the congregation of protestant dissenters
1788: Daniel was born on the 24th June at Sible Hedingham, Essex, and baptised on 22nd July at the Congregation of Protestant Dissenters, Castle Hedingham. His surname was given as Hurrell. His parents were John and Sarah Hurrell.

At some point during the 23 years between 1788 and 1811, Daniel made the long journey to Kent. As his family do not appear to have gone to Kent with him, he probably went as an adult in the early years of the 19th Century.

1811: Daniel married Sophia Youell on 29th July at St Mary, Chalk, Kent. Daniel's surname was given as Hurril. Both were shown as being of this parish meaning they were resident at the time. Neither was able to sign the register. The witnesses were Ann Carter and Stephen Redsell. Redsell was witness to a number of other marriages in the register, and so was probably the parish clerk. It is not clear why the marriage took place here - Sophia's baptism does not appear in the registers, nor do there appear to be other entries for the Youell and Harrall families.

1812: Daniel and Sophia's son Edward was born on 30th October at Frindsbury, Kent, and baptised at Zoar Chapel, Strood on 13th December.

1813: Daniel and Sophia's second son John, my great-great-great-grandfather, was born on 18th January at Hoo St Werbegh, Kent, and baptised at Zoar Chapel, Strood on 5th March. Daniel and Sophia's surname was spelt Harrall, corrected from Harald by Thomas Drew, protestant dissenting minister. Nine more children would be born, all of them at Hoo and mostly baptised at Zoar chapel in Strood.

1837: Daniel's wife Sophia died and was buried on 8th June at St Werbegh, Hoo. She was 46 years old.

1838: Daniel remarried to Mary Grigsby at St Werbegh, Hoo. She was eight years younger than him. They would have just one child together.

1841 Census:

Daniel was fifty years old at the time of the 1841 census. The Harrall family were living at Windmill Hill, Hoo, Kent. They appear on the census as Harrel.

Daniel is shown as a Farmer. Daniel was 50 years old, his wife Mary was 42.

There were six children. John was 27 and is shown as a malt man. The others were Jemima, 20, George, 15, Jane, 13, Maria, 10 and William, 4. All of the family were born in Kent. Their entry is here.

1847: Daniel's son John married Mary Anne Martin on the 17th October at St Mary's church, Higham, Kent. Daniel's daughter Maria was one of the witnesses.

1851 census:

Daniel was sixty-one years old at the time of the 1851 census. The Harrall family were living at Mill Hill, Hoo, Kent. They appear on the census as Harrall.

Daniel is shown as a farmer of 40 acres. His wife Mary was 61.

With them were their daughters Maria, 21 and Sarah Ann, 9, as well as their grand-daughter Margaret Elizabeth Harrall, Maria's illegitmate daughter, aged 2 months. Also in their household that night were Mary's mother Mary Grigsby, 83, and a 16 year old live-in servant William Harpum.

Daniel was born at Sible Hedingham, Essex. His wife Mary was born in Newington, Kent, and his three daughters in Hoo, Kent.

1858: Daniel's daughter Maria married William Harpum on 7th June at Hoo St Werbergh. This is presumably the same William Harpum who was a recorded as a live-in servant in Daniel's household on the 1851 census.

1861 census:

Daniel was seventy-five years old at the time of the 1861 census. The Harrall family were living at Rose Hill Cottage, Hoo, Kent.

Daniel is shown as a farmer of eight acres. His wife Mary was 61.

There were two children. Sarah was 19, and there is also Eliza aged 10, recorded as Daniel and Mary's daughter, although this is clearly not likely. She is probably the Margaret Elizabeth recorded on the 1851 census, and thus their granddaughter. Also in the household on census night was a visitor, Ellen Latter, 19.

Daniel was born at Sible Hedingham, Essex. His wife Mary was born in Newington, Kent, and his daughter and granddaughter in Hoo, Kent.

      Hoo St Werburgh
1863: Daniel died in Hoo, Kent. He was 75 years old. He was buried at Hoo St Werbegh church on 23rd August, when his address was given as Mill Hill Road, Hoo.
