1821: John was born in Horseheath, Cambridgeshire. He was baptised in All Saints Church on 18th July. His parents were Thomas and Mary Carter. Thomas was from Castle Camps and Mary from Linton. They had been married in 1811 in Shudy Camps church. In censuses, John would give his birthplace as Shudy Camps, which is the adjacent parish.


Shudy Camps
1840:
John married Rebecca Lucas in Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire on the 16th May. Both were under age, and both signed the register with a cross. The witnesses were John Suttle and Elizabeth Carter.

1841: Their daughter, my great-great-grandmother Mary Ann, was born on the 13th August. She was baptised on 23rd January 1842 in Shudy Camps parish church.


 
 
1851 census:

John was thirty-one years old at the time of the 1851 census. The census gives the family's address as Church End, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.

John was working as an agricultural labourer. His wife Rebecca was 30 years old.

John had seven children at home at the time of the 1851 census. Mary aged 9, George aged 8, James aged 7, Jane aged 6, Harriet aged 5, Charles aged 4 and Henry aged 1.

John gave his birthplace as Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire, as for all the family. The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 
1861 census:

John was forty-one years old at the time of the 1861 census. The census gives the family's address as The Grange, Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

John was working as a farm labourer. His wife Rebecca was 42 years old.

John had nine children at home at the time of the 1861 census. George aged 18, James aged 17, Harriet aged 15, Charles aged 13, Joseph aged 10, Jarvis aged 6, Julia aged 4, Fanny aged 3 and Elijah aged 1. George, James, Harriet, Charles and Joseph are all shown as farm workers. Mary Ann, Jane and Henry who appeared on the 1851 census, are no longer at home. Mary Ann was in service, and so probably was Jane. Henry may well be dead.

John was born at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire. All the rest of the family were born at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire, except for Elijah who was born in Duxford. The entry is here and here.

Neighbours of the Carter family were the Reynolds family. Among them was 20 year old Robert Reynolds, who would marry John's daughter Mary Ann in 1864. The transcript of the entry for their household is here, and they can also be seen on the entry page for the Carter family.

John's daughter Mary Ann, my great-great-grandmother, was nineteen years old at the time of the 1861 census. She is shown in the return as Ann. She was working as a nursemaid in the household of George Jonas, a farmer of 400 acres, at St Peter's Street, Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

As well as the Jonases and their children, the household contained a governess, a cook and a housemaid, all girls from local villages.

John was forty-nine years old at the time of the 1871 census. The census gives the family's address as Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

John was working as an agricultural labourer. His wife Rebecca was 50 years old. her name is given as Rebekah. She is also shown as an agricultural labourer.

John had six children at home at the time of the 1871 census. Joseph aged 20, Jarvis aged 16, Julia aged 14, Elijah aged 12, John aged 9 and William aged 7. Joseph, Jarvis and Elijah are all shown as agricultural labourers.

John's birthplace was Horseheath, Cambridgeshire. Rebecca and the three oldest children were born in Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire, while the youngest three were born in Duxford, Cambridgeshire. Their entry is here.

John was working as an agricultural labourer. His wife Rebecca was 59 years old. She is also shown as an agricultural labourer.

John had three children at home at the time of the 1881 census. Elijah aged 22, John aged 19 and William aged 17. They are all shown as agricultural labourers. Their brother Jarvis and his wife lived in the next cottage, and in the next cottage were James and Abigail Reynolds, parents of Mary Ann's husband Robert.

John was sixty-nine years old at the time of the 1891 census. The census gives the family's address as Cottage, Brands Farm, Duxford Grange, Cambridgeshire.

John was working as a farm bailiff. His wife Rebecca was 68 years old.

John had two children at home at the time of the 1891 census. One was his son John, who was 31 years old, and is shown as a widower. The other was his grandson George, who was aged 5, and was probably John's son. John is shown as an agricultural labourer. Jarvis and Elijah were living in adjacent cottages with their families.
