(1811-1896). My Father's Father's Mother's Father's Mother. My Great-Great-Great-Grandmother.


    1811: Mary was born at Borden, Kent.

1828-9: Mary and Thomas Waters's daughter Mary was born in about 1829, suggesting a marriage date of 1828-29. The marriage was not at Newington, but may have been at Mary's home parish of Borden.


1832: the baptism of Mary's daughter Sarah is recorded in the Newington registers.

 



1841 census:

Mary was thirty at the time of the 1841 census. The Waters family were living at Libet Wells, Newington, Kent.

Her husband Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. He was 44.

There were four children. Mary aged 12, Sarah aged 8, Thomas aged 4 and Frances, aged 3.

1849
: Mary's youngest son, my great-great-grandfather George Herbert Waters was born in Lower Halstow, Kent, just outside of Newington. He was baptised (and recorded as George Albert) at St Margaret's church on 4th February, the son of Thomas and Mary Waters. Thomas's occupation was shown as a labourer.

   
 


1851 census:

Mary was forty at the time of the 1851 census. The Waters family were living at Lower Halstow, Kent.

Her husband Thomas is shown as a labourer. He was 50 years old.

There were three children. Thomas was 13, Frances was 10 and George was 2.

Mary was born in Borden, Kent. Everyone else was born at Newington, Kent, except for George who was born at Halstow in Kent.The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 


1861 census:

Mary was fifty at the time of the 1861 census. The Waters family were living at Lower Halstow, Kent.

Her husband Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. He was 61.

George was the only child living at home, and he was 12 years old.

Mary was born in Borden, Kent. Thomas was born in Newington, Kent. George was born at Halstow in Kent.The transcript for their entry is here.

 
 


1871 census:

Mary was sixty-three at the time of the 1871 census. The family were living in Church Lane, Newington, Kent.

Her husband Thomas was shown as unemployed. He was 75.

Mary was born in Borden, Kent. Thomas was born in Newington, Kent. The transcript for their entry is here. Thomas and Mary's son Thomas Jr was also living in Newington, with his wife Jane and 1 year old daughter Emma.

 
 

1871:
Thomas and Mary's son George, my great-great-grandfather, married Mary Ann Harrall at St Mary's church, Newington, Kent on the 15th October. He gave his occupation as engineer. The parents of the couple, Thomas Waters and John Harrall, were both described as labourers. The witnesses were R Croucher and Emily Elliott. George marked the register with a cross - that is to say, he was illiterate. Nobody else signed the register, which was filled in entirely by the minister.


 


1881 census:

Mary was seventy years old at the time of the 1881 census. The Waters family were living at Church Lane, Newington, Kent.

Her husband Thomas is shown as an agricultural labourer. He was 82.

Mary was born in Borden, Kent. Thomas was born in Newington, Kent. Their entry is here.

 


1887: Mary's husband Thomas died on the 23rd May in Newington, Kent. He was said to be 88 years old.

 


1891 census:

Mary was eighty-one years old at the time of the 1891 census. She was living at High Street, Newington, Kent.

Her status is a widow. She is shown as a caretaker.

Mary was born in Borden, Kent. The entry is here.

 



1896: Mary died on 15th July at Chatham, probably at the home of her daughter Frances Ingram.
