Frances Huckle

    Frances Huckle

born Bourn, Cambridgeshire, 1824
died Histon, Cambridgeshire, 1908

on the Cornwell family tree
part of the
Cornwell family story

married to William Cornell

mother of William Huckle Cornwell

daughter of
William Huckle
and
Elizabeth Farrington

Frances Huckle
(1824-1908). My Mother's Father's Father's Mother. My Great-Great-Grandmother.

  Bourn
1818:
Frances's parents William Huckell and Elizabeth Farrington married at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire on 26th January.

font
1824:
Frances was baptised at St Mary's church, Bourn, Cambridgeshire on 22nd February.

1841 Census:

Frances was fifteen years old at the time of the 1841 census (probably seventeen). Her surname is given as Huckel. The Huckel family were living on Green Street, Comberton, Cambridgeshire.

Her father William is not at home on census night (we know he was a soldier). Her mother Elizabeth was 55 years old at the time of the 1851 census.

There were two other children living in the household at the time of the 1841 census: Jane Huckel (presumably Frances's sister) was 20 and William Huckel (presumably Jane's son) was 2. William died in his nineties in the 1930s, and his headstone survives in Comberton churchyard.

All the household were born in Cambridgeshire. The transcript for their entry is here.

1842: my great-great-grandparents get married
1842: Frances married William Cornell of Histon on the 4th July at Histon parish church in Cambridgeshire. The register gives her surname as Huckle. William is shown as being of full age and his occupation is given as labourer. Frances is shown as being under age (that is to say, not yet 21). Her father William is shown as a soldier.

1851 Census:

Frances was twenty-nine years old at the time of the 1851 census. Her surname is given as Cornhile. The Cornhile family were living on 65 Church Lane, Histon, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband William is shown as a farm labourer. William was thirty-seven years old at the time of the 1851 census.

Frances had two children at the time of the 1851 census: Sarah Ann was 3 and James was 1.

Frances was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire. Her husband William was born in Histon, Cambridgeshire, as were all the children. The transcript for their entry is here.

1861 Census:

Frances was thirty-seven years old at the time of the 1861 census. Her surname is given as as Cornall. The Cornall family were living at 15 Side of the Hill, Histon, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband William is shown as an agricultural labourer. William was thirty-four years old at the time of the 1861 census.

Frances had six children at the time of the 1861 census: Sarah Ann 14, James 11, Louisiana (Lucy Hannah on the 1871 census) 7, Alfred 6, Elizabeth 4 and Mary E 1.

Frances was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire. Her husband William was born in Histon, Cambridgeshire, as were all the children. The transcript for their entry is here.

Interestingly, at the house next door, 16 Side of the Hill, Histon, Cambridgeshire, were living James and Susan Cornal and their children, Charles, Sophia, William, Henry and Richard. All except Susan were born in Histon, and it seems probable that this is the family of James Cornwell, William Cornwell's brother. The transcript for their entry is here.

1864: Frances and William's eighth child, my grandfather William Huckle Cornwell, was born on 24th January at Histon, Cambridgeshire. The birth was notified by his mother Frances, who signed the register with a cross, showing she was illiterate. Although his parents' surname was given as Cornell on their marriage certificate, and all William's elder siblings were registered with the surname Cornell, William's surname is given as Cornwell in the Histon Parish Registers and on his birth certificate.

1871 Census:

Frances was forty-seven years old at the time of the 1871 census. Her surname is given as Cornell. The Cornell family were living on Bell Lane, Histon, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband William is shown as an agricultural labourer. William was fifty years old at the time of the 1871 census.

Frances had six children at the time of the 1871 census: Lucy Hannah (Louisiana on the 1861 census) was 18, Elizabeth Jane was 14 , Mary Eliza 11, Hannah 9, William Huckle 7 and Fred Charly 3. Sarah Ann, James and Alfred, who appear on the 1861 census, are no longer at home.

Frances was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire. Her husband William was born in Histon, Cambridgeshire, as were all the children. The transcript for their entry is here.

Living two households away in the schedule is James Cornwell with his sons Charles and Edward. This seems likely to be the same James living next door in 1861 with his wife Susan and children Charles, Sophia, William, Henry and Richard. Edward's age corresponds to that of Henry. Indeed, it seems likely that they are the same houses as in 1861, the street renamed and the houses renumbered with odd and even on opposite sides of the road. What happened to Susan and the other children is still a mystery to me. The transcript for their entry is
here.

1881 Census:

Frances was fifty three years old at the time of the 1881 census. She was an agricultural labourer's wife. Her surname is given as Cornell. The Cornell family were living on Coes Lane, Histon, Cambridgeshire.

Her husband William is shown as an agricultural labourer. He was 66.

Frances had five children at home at the time of the 1881 census: Alfred 25, Elizabeth 23 , Mary Eliza 21, William 17 and Frederick 13. Also living in the house was William Cornell aged 3, described as grandson of William and Frances.

Frances was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire. Her husband William was born in Histon, Cambridgeshire, as were all the children and grandchildren. The transcript for their entry is here.

1887: Frances's husband William died and was buried at St Andrew's Church, Histon on the 4th August. He was 66 years old. His surname was recorded in the Histon parish registers as Cornwell rather than Cornell.

1891 Census:

Frances was sixty six years old at the time of the 1891 census. She is shown as a widower, aged 66. Her surname is given as Cornell. She was living at High Street, Histon, Cambridgeshire, two households away (probably next door) from her son William and his family. Also living with her is her grandson William, described as an agricultural labourer, aged 13. She was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire, and he was born in Histon in Cambridgeshire. The transcript for their entry is here.

The transcript of the entry for her son William and his family is here.

1901 Census:

Frances was seventy seven years old at the time of the 1901 census. She is shown as a widower. Her surname is given as Cornell. She was living near the School, Histon, Cambridgeshire. She was born in Bourn in Cambridgeshire. The transcript for the entry is here.

1908: Frances's death is recorded in Histon in the first quarter. Her name was given as Frances Cornell. She was 84 years old.
