Mary Ann Bowles
(1843-1916). My Father's Father's Father's mother. My Great-Great-Grandmother.

Mary Ann is one of the most colourful of my ancestors. It is said that her mother, while pregnant with her, walked the 300 miles from the Plymouth workhouse to Kent, accompanied by Mary Ann's five year old sister. Mary Ann was born in Kent, and seems to have spent many of her childhood years in the workhouse. She became pregnant at 18 while working as a servant in Chatham, and married the father, giving birth to a boy. But within three years she was living with another man, my great-great-grandfather, as man and wife. It was only ten years after her first marriage that her legal husband died, leaving her free to marry her new husband, by whom she had already had three children.

It is unlikely that any of her descendants until now knew of Mary Ann's colourful past. She lived well into my grandfather's lifetime, keeping a small shop in the Frindsbury district of Rochester, and died during the First World War.

      Mary Ann Bowles
1843: Mary Ann Bowles was born on the 1st November at the Mall, Preston, Kent. Preston is a suburb of the town of Faversham, and the Mall connects the centre of Faversham with the London to Canterbury road. Her father was given as Thomas Bowls (recorded as Bowles on later census and other data) and her mother as Caroline Bowls formerly Thompson. Caroline's place of residence was given as simply 'Preston'. The birth was registered on the 14th November. She was baptised at Preston on 7th January 1844, when her parents' names were given as Caroline and Thomas Bowles.

1851 census:

Mary Ann was eight years old at the time of the 1851 census. She was living in the Faversham Union Workhouse, Faversham, Kent.

She is apparently living with her mother and sisters. Unfortunately, the census institution form does not record relationships between inmates. Her mother, Caroline Bowles, is shown as a pauper. She is shown as 46 years old: this is not right, as Caroline was 36. Caroline is shown as married, and yet there is no sign of her husband.

Mary Ann was the third (actually second) of four children. Angelina was 13, Deborah was 12 (but she was actually 2) and Susannah was 6.

Mary Ann is shown as being born at Faversham in Kent, as were Susannah and Deborah. Her mother Caroline was born at Devonport in Devon, as was Angelina. The transcript for their entry is here and you can view the original census page here.

1861 census:

Mary Ann was seventeen years old at the time of the 1861 census. She was living as a servant in the household of her uncle and aunt, Stephen and Mary Hudson, at Pleasant Row, Chatham, Kent.

Her uncle was 73 years old, and is described as a gardener. His wife Mary was 77.

Mary Ann was the only other person in the house. She is shown as being born at Faversham in Kent. Stephen Hudson was born at Cliffe in Kent, and Mary Hudson at Chilham in Kent. The transcript for their entry is here.

Mary Ann's mother Caroline is forty-four years old at the time of the 1861 census. The family were living at Tanner Street, Faversham, Kent.

Caroline describes herself as married, but her husband is not listed. Caroline has four children. Frances is 22 (could she be a twin of Angelina on the 1851 census?), Susannah is 15, Deborah is 13 (confirming that she was 2 in 1851, not 12) and Charles is 8. Also living in the household is Thomas Bowles, aged 40, described as the brother-in-law of Caroline Bowles (could he actually be the father of the three younger children?).

Caroline and Frances were born at Stoke Damerel in Devon (this is the correct parish name for Devonport, recorded in 1851). The other children, and the adult Thomas, were all born in Faversham. The transcript for their entry is here.

Also worth noting in 1861 is the 18 year old Henry Welch, whom Mary Ann will marry the following year. He is with his parents and siblings at New Brompton, and the entry is here.

1862: On the 17th August, Mary Ann married Henry Welch at Faversham. She was pregnant. Mary Ann's father was named as Thomas Bowles, and her mother Caroline was a witness. The marriage was reported in the Kentish Gazette for Tuesday 26th August 1862:

At the time of the 1911 census, Mary Ann and George Knott would declare that they had been married for 49 years - that is to say, their marriage would have taken place about 1862. However, this may have been intended to refer to Mary Ann's marriage to Henry Welch, as a way of making all their own children appear legitimate.

1863: Mary Ann's son Charles Henry Welch was born in the first quarter at Faversham.

1862-66: It is not clear what happened in this period. At some point, between the marriage of Mary Ann to Henry Welch and the birth of George Knott Jr in 1866, Mary Ann is no longer with Henry Welch, but is with George Knott.

George Bowles Knott
1866: Mary Ann's son George Knott Jr was born at Gillingham. By this point, she must have been in a relationship with George Knott, who is probably George Knott Jr's father.

1869: Mary Ann's son, my great-grandfather William Knott, was born on the 3rd of December at Upchurch, Kent. His father's name is given as George Knott, and his mother's as Mary Ann Knott, formerly Bowles. Mary Ann was the informant, and her address shows that he was born at home. His father's occupation is given as a brickfield labourer. Mary Ann signed the register with a cross, suggesting she was illiterate, and could not write her own name. The birth was registered on the 10th of January 1870.

1871 census:

Mary Ann was twenty-seven years old at the time of the 1871 census. She was apparently married to George Knott. The Knott family were living at Halstow Road, Upchurch, Kent.

Her husband George is shown as a labourer. He was 28 years old.

Mary Ann had three children. George was 5, Joseph was 3 and my great-grandfather William was 1.

Mary Ann is shown as being born at Faversham in Kent, her husband at Gillingham in Kent. Her son George was born at Gillingham and the other two children at Upchurch. The transcript for their entry is here.

Mary Ann's first (and still legal) husband Henry Welch is living as a lodger in Folkestone Road, Hougham, Dover on the 1871 census. He gave his age as 26. You can see the entry here. Her son Charles Welch is living with his grandmother in New Brompton. You can see the entry here.

1871:
The 27 year old Henry Welch died in the Medway registration district in the 4th quarter.

Frindsbury they never moved far
1872:
Mary Ann
married George Knott on the 17th March at All Saints church, Frindsbury, Kent. He gave his status as bachelor, she as widow. Both of them gave their place of residence as Frindsbury. Mary Ann gave her father's name as Thomas Edward Bowles. The witnesses were Joseph Cox and Jane Cox - Jane was George's sister. Interestingly, both George and Mary Ann were able to sign the register. It is not clear why they married in Frindsbury. They were living in Upchurch in 1871 and would be later the same year for the birth of their son Fredrick. Perhaps it was the home parish of the Coxes. However, by 1886 the Knotts would also be living in Strood/Frindsbury.

1881 census:

Mary Ann was thirty-seven years old at the time of the 1881 census. The Knott family were living at 8, Reeves Cottages, Gillingham, Kent.

Her husband George is shown as a brickfield labourer, aged 38.

Mary Ann had five children. George was 15, Joseph was 13, William was 11, Frederick was 8 and Caroline was 4.

Mary Ann is shown as being born at Faversham in Kent, her husband at Gillingham in Kent. William, Joseph and Frederick were born at Upchurch in Kent, and Caroline was born at Halstow. The transcript for their entry is here.

1886:
The
baptismal record for Mary Ann's youngest son Thomas records that the family were living at Medway Cottages, Strood, Rochester.

1891 census:

Mary Ann was forty-seven years old at the time of the 1891 census. The Knott family were living at 14, Grange Road, Frindsbury, Kent. The road still exists, not far from the centre of Rochester.

Her husband George is shown as a general labourer. He is shown as 46 years old.

Mary Ann had five children. George was 25, William was 21, Frederick was 18, Lilla was 6 and Thomas was 4. Joseph and Caroline, who appear on the 1881 census in the household, are no longer here.

Mary Ann was born at Faversham in Kent, while her husband George was born at Gillingham in Kent. Her son George was also born at Gillingham, William and Frederick were born at Halstow (Upchurch in other sources) while Lily and Thomas were born in Strood. The transcript for their entry is here.

Grange Road 58 Grange Road
1901 census: Mary Ann is shown as fifty-seven years old at the time of the 1901 census. The Knott family were living at 58, Grange Road, Frindsbury, Kent. This is the same road as in 1891, and it may even be the same house if they were renumbered.

Mary Ann is shown as a sweets and general shopkeeper. Her husband George is shown as a brickfield labourer and as being aged fifty-three(unlikely to be correct). His wife .

Mary Ann had two children still living at home. Lilla (shown as Lily) was 16 and Thomas was 14. He is shown as an office boy - brickworks.

Mary Ann was born at Faversham in Kent, her husband George at Gillingham in Kent. Lily and Thomas were born in Strood. The transcript for their entry is here.

Grange Road
1903: in Kelly's Directory of Kent 1903 is the following listing under shopkeepers:

Knott George 58, Grange Road, Frindsbury, Rochester

You can view the page here. George's name is towards the bottom of the middle column.

1911 census:

Mary Ann was sixty-seven years old at the time of the 1911 census. The Knott family were living at 58, Grange Road, Frindsbury, Kent. This is the same house as in 1901, and it may even be the same house as in 1891 if they were renumbered. The house is shown as 4 rooms + shop on the census form.

Mary Ann is shown as a shop keeper working for her own account (that is to say, neither employed or employing). Her husband George is shown as a general labourer. He was 68.

Mary Ann gives her place of birth, curiously, as Strood, Kent. This is the adjacent parish to Frindsbury, where they were living. Both Frindsbury and Strood are in the city of Rochester. Up until this census, Mary Ann had always said she was born in Faversham. George was born at Gillingham in Kent. The transcript for their entry is here and you can see the original form here.

1913: in Kelly's Directory of Kent, Surrey and Sussex 1913 is the following listing under shopkeepers:

Knott George 58, Grange Road, Frindsbury, Rochester

You can view the page here. George's name is towards the bottom of the third column.

Mary Ann Knott née Bowles the Knott family plot
1916: Mary Ann Knott died on 27th November in 58 Grange Road, Frindsbury, Kent, of liver cancer. She was 73 years old. Although she had run a shop since at least 1901, she is described as wife of George Knott, a general labourer. The death was registered later the same day by her husband George. She was buried in the family plot A192 at Strood Cemetery, Cuxton Road, Strood on 30th November, the first of the family to be buried there.

1921: Mary Ann's husband George's died at his son William's house, 96 Temple Street, Strood on 11th June. He was 78 years old. He was buried with her in plot A192 of Strood Cemetery.

1925: Kelly's Directory of Rochester, Gillingham, Chatham, etc shows that 58 Grange Road was still a shop, under the ownership of an Albert Hewitt. Today, it is a terraced house.
