St Paul, Elmstead Market

church house (formerly St Paul)

Elmstead Market, in the parish of Elmstead, is half a mile or so of kebab shops, second hand car lots and sports pubs in outer-Colchester suburbia, but the medieval parish church of St Ann and St Lawrence is alone beside the Hall a mile to the north along a narrow lane. Because it was so remote, this church dedicated to St Paul was built as a chapel of ease to the parish church in 1910 by JEK & JP Cutts. The setting is slightly out of the village on the pleasant road to Wivenhoe. It was declared redundant in the 1980s and is now a private house.
